• 9/11

    11 September 2011

Hard to believe it's been 10 years since 9/11. Like everyone else who was around at the time, I remember the day perfectly. I didn't hear about the attacks until quite late in the day, after the Twin Towers had fallen. I watched the TV coverage with my jaw hanging open for most of the rest of the day. I hadn't visited the USA yet -- I went there for the first time the following month -- but I knew people who were living there. I think everyone does -- America, more than any other country, is where the various races of the world converge. I think that's why it was particularly shocking, because it hurt people everywhere, even in countries where many people claim to be anti-American. It wasn't just a blow against America -- it was a blow against us all. People all over the world had friends and family members living in the States, and any of those could have been victims of the brutal, senseless assault.

The world has changed a lot since that day in 2001. I think that a lot of those changes are for the worse. I didn't approve of the unjustifiable invasion of Iraq. I don't like the way certain politicians have worked hard to create a sense of fear among the masses, and then sought to benefit personally from that. It's so sad that people mistrust others and condemn whole races and religions because of the actions of a fanatic few. But, as much as I might disapprove of how our leaders reacted and the wrongs they have committed, that doesn't serve as any sort of an excuse or validation for the terrorists who targeted the innocent on the 11th of September, 2001. It was a day of evil deeds, and those at the centre of the carnage were base creatures of shame and horror.

My thoughts are with the citizens of America today. And with those in other countries who lost people they knew. And with those who have suffered as a direct consequence since then, wherever they've from.

My thoughts are with us all.
