• Four stages of Darren Shan

    14 May 2022

Although it's known as the Cirque Du Freak series in the USA, the correct name of my 12 book series about vampires is, of course, The Saga Of Darren Shan. (Though in retrospect I do think the Americans made the right call in changing the series name, and perhaps we should have done it elsewhere too, as while it's not a correct description -- the CDF only really features in a handful of the books -- it's certainly a good deal catchier!!)

Set across twenty years or so (I was always a bit vague about the passage of time in the books, so don't quote me on that!), Darren undergoes a lot of changes over the course of his adventures, a feature which is mirrored nicely in these four VERY different pieces of fan art on him.

The first, by Liv, has its origins in book 1, and focuses on Darren in the coffin after he's faked his death and is buried alive. I can't recall anyone else drawing Darren in the coffin, which is odd, as it's such pivotal, heartbreaking moment for him.

The next, by Noel, centres on Darren in his pirate costume, which he wore for quite a few years after first hooking up with the Cirque Du Freak. From a fashion point of view, that's definitely not one of my finest calls as an author!!

The third, by Ebbarie, comes from much later in the story's run, when Darren is struggling to control his darker half, and is worried that he might end up becoming the Lord of the Shadows.

And the fourth, by a Tweeter with the user handle of Knock Out Art, treats us to that period of Darren's life when he was a... FAIRY?!? What the...?!? Hmmm... I must have forgotten that part of the series! Maybe it dates to his time in Vampire Paradise...
