• Halloween snaps - part two

    13 December 2020

Rounding up my Halloween photos (Late? What you mean, I'm late?!? I'm never late -- YOU must have celebrated Halloween EARLY!!!!), here are four more pics of the Shans in Samhain action.

My favourite game as a kid was bobbing for money. (Never mind bobbing for apples -- I was a capitalist, not a fruit-picker!) I still haven't lost the knack all these decades later, though I doubt I could hoover up several coins in one go these days, as I used to be able to do back in my prime...

In the second, the old dog teaches the young pup some new tricks, and after several failed attempts, Dante emerges triumphant. (Mind you, he was happy to stop after just one coin. I'm either giving him too much pocket money, or I was a far greedier boy than he is!)

My other fave Halloween game from those long-ago childhood years was building a mound of floor, balancing a grape or cherry on top, then taking turns cutting away a slice of the flour. Whoever knocked off the grape or cherry had to bury their face in the flour. (This always worked best straight after bobbing, when your face was still wet.) Has this game ever been given an actual name?!? Who knows? Who cares! It's great fun, even if it's nameless!!! Oh, and by the way -- is anyone else concerned by how much Dante looks like The Joker in this photo?!? (As depicted in The Killing Joke.)

In the final photo, a serene Gaia decorates a pumpkin, unaware of the trials she's going to be faced with in future Halloweens when she's old enough to bob and slice!!!
