Orion and the Dark
09 February 2024Friday is Daddy and Daughter day in my neck of the woods. I take Gaia for swimming lessons after her pre-school finishes, then we go for a McDonalds. In good weather we hit a park after that, but we haven't been doing that much this time of the year. Today we had to pick up my son Dante from school (Mrs Shan was at the hairdresser's). When we got home, Gaia suggested that she and I watch a film called Brian And The Dark. (Dante hurried upstairs to play on my Meta Quest. He's much more into gaming than watching movies) I luckily managed to find the film that she was talking about, which was actually called Orion And The Dark, and settled down to watch it with her, with zero expectations.
It's a LOVELY little film. Written by Charlie Kaufman, of Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind fame, it's not quite as weird as his films for adults, but definitely has his fingerprints all over it. It's clever and funny and manages to both destroy the own rules of storytelling that it initially sets up, while telling an ultimately very moving story about family ties and the links between past, present and future. If you haven't yet caught it, go check it out ASAP, and if you bump into Orion in your dreams shortly thereafter, tell him Gaia sent you (and me) his way!!!
