Shan sings!
01 April 2020
Inspired by the recent bewitching Gil Gadot & friends rendition of the song Imagine, I thought it might be nice if I also recorded a song to bring a smile to people's faces in these trying times. I've got a pretty good singing voice, even if I do say so myself, and I've always been fairly good at playing instruments -- hand me any instrument going and I can probably knock out a halfway decent tune on it after a couple of tries, even if I've never seen it before.
The problem was, I've no musical instruments in the house, and I couldn't pop out to buy or borrow any, because of the lockdown. That's when I had a brainwave -- although I lacked any proper instruments, there were loads of baby instruments around the place, which my son Dante had played with when he was younger, and which my daughter Gaia has now inherited. Could I make THOSE work?!? After a few quick experiments, the answer was -- YES I COULD!!!
So I set out to record myself singing, then playing the instruments one at a time, before editing the whole thing together -- that's so easy to do these days. My choice of song? I plumped for Anarchy In The UK, by the Sex Pistols, which seemed sadly appropriate in the current world situation. But after I'd done that, and before I could hit the SHARE button, I started thinking it would be nice to take this even further, since I was having so much fun with it. So I began recording other punk/metal/hard rock favourites of mine, such as Enter Sandman, Bat Out Of Hell, School's Out (that one is DEFINITELY apt at the moment), and a glorious version of November Rain with a 15 minute improv bit on a yazoo at the part where Slash normally does his guitar solo.
I ended up with an album's worth of material, almost two hours of tunes in total. I considered cutting that down, but then I thought, with so much time on their hands, people wouldn't mind the odd bit of indulgency. So I went ahead an uploaded the entire lot, and gave the album a title -- SHIMMY WITH SHAN. And it's available to download NOW, for your listening pleasure, exclusively at the following online store -- not Apple or Google Tunes or Spotify or any of those -- no, no, no -- this beatific baby can only be found on the...
