Wester Flack was one of the key characters in my Saga Of Larten Crepsley prequel series, which spanned the two centuries before Mr Crepsley crossed paths with Darren and Steve in the Cirque Du Freak. As in my original vampire series, my main character (in this case Larten) had many different types of relationships with many different types of characters, but in terms of driving the overall plot forward, there had to be a central dynamic relationship. In the Cirque Du Freak books, there were actually two of those -- Darren's relationship with Mr Crepsley, and his relationship with Steve. In the Mr Crepsley series, the core relationship was Larten's bond with his blood-brother, Wester.

I don't want to say too much about Wester, as I'd have to include spoilers, but I found him a fascinating character to develop. We first meet him when he's a similar age to Larten, and similarly lost and alone, and I loved how they became so important to one another, and how Wester adored and supported Larten over the following century and a half, but how events conspired to place an unbearable strain on that bond. It was only through Wester that I finally felt that I got to know and understand the inner mind and heart of that most conflicted of vampires, Larten Crepsley...
