• Your choice of freaky FREE audio books

    11 June 2020

I've posted before about the audio version of Cirque Du Freak that's been shared with students by the staff (and their friends) of Court Fields School. I would normally never officially allow anyone to post audio recordings of my books online, but when lockdown started, I agreed to let teachers and librarians do this if they were teaching my books in class, so that they could continue to teach them to students over the internet.

The Court Fields gang have now recorded all 33 chapters of Cirque Du Freak (book 1), each chapter read by somebody different. And they brought in a very special guest to read out the final two chapters -- ME!!!! I thought it would be a fun thing to do, and I'd never read out those chapters before (I've actually read out very few scenes from my books over my two decades of touring), so I gave it a go, and you can listen to those, or the entire book if you want, by clicking here: https://courtfields.net/cirque-du-freak-auidobook-chapters/

Alternatively, if you'd like to listen to a professional read the book, all of the Cirque Du Freak books, read by Ralph Lister, are on Audible, and the first one is currently FREE!! I don't think you can download it -- unless you pay for it -- but you can listen to it for free on the Audible FREE AUDIO BOOKS page by clicking on the following link -- Cirque Du Freak is in the TWEEN section. https://stories.audible.com/discovery

If you are planning on doing a professional recording, maybe create a voice cast for the books? So it’s not just 1 person Per chapter or 1 person the entire book but a whole group. Kind of like these other podcasts I listen to called “orbiting human circus” and “welcome to nightvale” where it’s mainly from the main protagonists view describing and elaborating his thoughts and then when Mr. Crepsley or tall or someone talk, then they have their own actors, voices, and tones. In fact, see if John Reilly would be willing to come back for the voice of Mr.Crepsley, he was rather great and what I imagined Mr.Crepsley would look and sound like. In addition to this, what would be interesting is if you could also toss in extra for ambient sounds like fires from the torches crackling low in the background of the vampire caves or you hear drops of trickling water or foot sloshes in water from when Darren is deep in the sewers ready to face off against the vanpaneze. Even if it is occasional and not all the time, I feel these would be nice touches to embrace the mood Of the story as if the listener was there.
