One
of
my
favourite
cartoonists
was
a
guy
called
Winsor
McCay.
He
drew
the
"Little
Nemo
in
Slumberland"
comic
strip,
as
well
a
loads
of
amazing
political
editorial
cartoons
for
newspapers.
He
was
also
a
movie
animation
pioneer,
who
invented
many
of
the
techniques
that
Walt
Disney
would
"borrow"
and
become
more
famous
for.
A
man
ahead
of
his
time,
he
created
the
first
ever
dinosaur
movie,
which
was
a
huge
hit
in
the
first
couple
of
decades
of
the
twentieth
century.
The
star
of
the
film
was
a
dinosaur
called
Gertie.
When
I
was
wandering
around
the
MGM
studios
in
Florida
in
2004,
I
was
delighted
to
spot
an
ice
cream
store
designed
as a
homage
to
Winsor
and
Gertie.
While
Bas
and
my
cousins
were
all
excited
about
the
rides
and
the
Star
Wars
parade
that
was
taking
place
that
day,
this
little
meeting
with
Gertie
was
probably
my
own
personal
highlight
of
the
day!!!! |
