This is part of the Demonata series, which is about demons from another universe trying to break through the Earth's defences. Protecting the Earth are men and women called Disciples, who have magical powers and who are aided by soldiers. In this book, a teenage Disciple called Grubbs is travelling through the demons' universe, hunting for information on  a new enemy called The Shadow. But his quest is cut short when he is called back to Earth for devastating reasons.

Darren Shan's books are always exciting and full of suspense and I didnt want to put my light off at night because I wanted to keep reading. The ending is a cliff-hanger, which is really frustrating -- I'm desperate to read the next book in the series.
