If you can keep your breakfast down as you read the second chapter then you're on your way to a great read as young Grubbs prepares to confront the demons who have robbed him of his family. With the help of his strange uncle Dervish and some hitherto unsuspected magical powers he tries desperately to understand and come to terms with what has happened as he explores secret passages, and finds out why his uncle goes out clearing up the ripped carcasses of animals at night."Lord Loss" is not so much creepy as horrifying, but once past that second chapter tough-stomached readers of 12 won't be able to put it down.
